morning endurance, ritually tended

Katarina Holbrough’s works reflect on femininity, tradition, and abundance through the archetype of The Empress. Each painting unfolds within a rich landscape where figures, thistles, and braided forms embody the quiet power and complexity of womanhood. Braids, drawn from personal memory, serve as symbols of maternal connection and ritual. Recalling the intimacy of daily moments shared between mother and daughter, moments that embody both care and resilience. Thistles, overlooked carrying an expectation of sacrifice, embodying femininity’s dual nature: beauty intertwined with prevailing expectations. In these worlds, figures merge with their environments, suggesting the interdependence of body and landscape. Reclaiming familiar symbols (a braid, a winding serpent, a drop of blood) to reflect intimacy, expectations, and the act of becoming. Through this imagery, Holbrough reconsiders inherited symbols of femininity, reclaiming them as sites of reflection, power, and renewal.
